Veteran Appreciation Day, Nicholas County, WV

"For several years now members of various Veteran's groups in West Virginia have been treated to a meal and games on an Appreciation Day. That day this year was Tuesday, July 11, 2017. Along with Sumersville, West Virginia's Mark Allen, the owner of Sarge's Dive Shop and The Summersville Marina, and Emma Michelinia of The Landing Zone Veteran Group from Ranielle, WC there were many volunteers that helped with the success of today's gathering. " - Terry Burhans 2017 - WCHS TV

Thank You

A big thank you to everyone who helped with the Mountaineer Veterans Garden of Honor.

I've (Lydena Wyatt) been given too much credit for coming up with the idea. While it's true, I did, but it still wouldn't have been possible for this idea to materialize, if not for Monica Smathers Venable and the L.Z. Rainelle WV Veterans Reunion Committee for financing the flags. Emma Michelini was a major driving force behind the project as well.

The volunteers that planted the flags worked tirelessly to plant over 11,000 flags I two days were my husband, David Wyatt (Stretch), my step-son, David A Wyatt (Boots), Lanny Michelini, J.w. Puckett, Markus (Kickstart) Holliday, Clark, Dave (Phone man) Harvey, and George (George Goodman. The L.Z. Rainelle WV Veterans Reunion Committee owes you a huge debt of gratitude. You guys ROCK!

Moutaineer Veterans Garden Of Honor

LZ Rainelle Veterans Reunion will have this display Memorial Weekend. Over 11,000 flags. One for each WV soldier killed since WWI, through Present.  Click here for map.
Information from Levi:

I have the preliminary figures and it looks like 11,476 flags will be displayed. I will be checking again.

Keep in mind that these figures are based on the figures that the government has as official casualties. The early wars may have figures that are off because they never had the technology to keep track of soldiers home states as correctly as we do today. Another thing that might cause an inconsistency that has been brought to my attention is some soldiers had recently moved to other states and that address was used, making them residents of other states. We can't possibly find these things out. We honor every soldier with this display no matter how many flags are displayed and we honor every American soldier even though that number is over 600,000 and it's not possible to put a flag up for each of them, they are on our minds and in our hearts. ~ Lydena Levi Wyatt
